What is Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko?
Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko, the National Digital Readiness programme, is a uniquely Aotearoa programme that has been developed to support teachers kaiako, school leaders and tumuaki to feel supported, confident and well equipped to implement the new Digital Technologies and Hangarau Matihiko content. The programme is based on the traditional Māori story of how Māui discovered the source of fire from his grandmother Mahuika.
What does Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko / The National Digital Readiness Programme include?
Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko comprises of 6 components designed to support your learning and development.
Te Tokorima-a-Mahuika: The Digital Readiness, online self review tool. Te Tokorima-a-Mahuika will help you to ascertain your ‘readiness’ to effectively implement DT and HM.
Pīkau: A toolkit or module of learning based around a theme or learning progression.
Te Pā Pouahi: An online course and mentoring of Digital Leaders (Pouahi), empowering them to lead professional learning in their school/kura/kāhui ako.
Ngā Kiriahi: A shared virtual community of practice for all conversations related to the National Digital Readiness Programme, Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko. A place to share practice, ask questions, access resources to support your learning and connect with other educators.
Ki Te Ahikāroa: Regional meetups for hands-on experiential learning opportunities, sharing examples of curriculum in action.
Te Tahu Ahi: A showcase and celebration of how school/kura/community have contextualised digital learning. Includes face-to-face celebrations and digital exemplars.
How will Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko / The National Digital Readiness Programme help me be ready to implement the new digital content by 2020?
This programme will support kaiako/teachers and leaders to understand the new digital content of the NZC, and Hangarau Matihiko in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. From now, up to the end of 2020, this programme will provide teachers/kaiako with online and face to face professional learning and development that is responsive and tailored to their needs. Through the use of the self review tool, teachers/kaiako will have an idea of their starting point and be directed to online modules of learning to support their next steps in learning. Modules or Pīkau/toolkits, include hands-on activities and resources teachers/kaiako can use immediately in the classroom. For teachers/kaiako with a good understanding of this content already, we encourage them to engage in Te Pā Pouahi and become pouahi/digital leaders in their school community.
An online community of practice/ngā kiriahi encourages conversations to continue and for interest groups to develop to continue to support learning in a particular area. Local meetups cater for those wanting to learn by connecting with others in their regions. Digital showcases will exemplify good practice to guide your direction.
How does Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko / The National Digital Readiness Programme (NDRP) compliment the other digital supports that are available? What other supports can we get access to?
The NDRP is one of four supports announced by the Ministry of Education June 2017.
These four are:
National Digital Championship. Celebrate excellence in digital technologies teaching and learning in schools and kura with the National Digital Championship — National Tech Competition Announcement Tahi Rua Toru Tech Challenge.
DT for All Equity Fund. Providing access to specialised technologies-rich learning and teaching environments for less-advantaged learners in both English medium and Māori medium settings. Each year until the end of 2020, this Equity Fund will reach 12,500 eligible students/ākonga who have limited structured support or digital technology learning at home and/or very limited or no access to technology or WiFi outside the school. Are Digital Technologies (DT) and Hangarau Matihiko (HM) new curriculum documents?
No. Digital Technologies (DT) is revised and strengthened content in the existing learning area of Technology in the New Zealand Curriculum.
Do we need to implement DT and HM in our school/kura curriculum and by when?
Yes, “Schools and kura will be expected to fully integrate the revised learning area into their curriculum by the start of the 2020 school year”. (Technology in the NZC, 2007, pp.1) Link to revised learning area.
Does Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko / The National Digital Readiness Programme come with release time for teacher development?
The Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko | The National Digital Readiness Programme supports teachers and Kaiako in their professional learning journey through a blend of on-line learning modules and facilitated learning opportunities, however there is no teacher release time provided.
Schools and kura will need to allocate time and resources to support engagement in this learning and reflect this as part of their PLD planning.
Additional support for digital fluency and tailored DT and HM Implementation support can be accessed via the appropriate CF PLD processes. (see Education services – Digital technologies & Hangarau Matihiko).
Why is this new learning important for our students to engage in?
Strengthening Digital Technologies & Hangarau Matihiko in New Zealand’s National Curricula is particularly important to the Ministry of Education.
“The goal of this change is to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to become digitally capable individuals. This change signals the need for greater focus on our students building their skills so they can be innovative creators of digital solutions, moving beyond solely being users and consumers of digital technologies.” (Helping to create a digitally fluent nation” Ministry of Education 2018)

There are a number of help supports in place for this programme and depending on what kind of help you are after, will depend on where you go to access it.

How is my information stored? (privacy concerns).
Your data is stored in a series of secured databases and only yourself, system administrators and help desk operators have access to it should you need assistance.
The information in the solution is private but some statistical data will be used for making decisions on how to make the tools, pīkau, events and webinars better.
Your personal information will not be used without your permission. Some usage data information may be used for statistical purposes and making decisions about possible enhancements in the program and to inform future Pīkau content, events, and webinars.
You can however opt out of this on your personal portal page if you wish or on registration.
In Ngā Kiriahi (Community of Practice) you can choose what to share with the community. If you wish to share a post, event or comment you decide who will be able to see it. Moderators, system administrators and help desk operators can also see your information should you need assistance.
Who has access to my results and progress in the Self Review Tool and Pīkau?
The results of the Self Review Tool are private to only you. The data will be used for comparison purposes within the tool so you can see how you are going towards your personal goals.
Your progress in Pīkau, completions and any badges are also private to you. System administrators and help desk operators can see your information should you need assistance.
Anonymised data on usage and progress will be used for statistical purposes and making decisions about possible enhancements in the program and to inform future Pīkau content, events, and webinars. You can however opt out of this on your personal portal page if you wish.
You can choose to share your progress with a colleague, or a leader as you wish. Evidence of your learning and progress could also be used to support teacher registration and professional inquiry evidence.
Who do I have to share my learning and progress with? Does it have to be linked to my school?
This is entirely your choice. You can keep your progress private, or share it with colleagues/team/kāhui ako/senior leader as you wish. You can engage in Kia Takatū ā-Matihiko using your school email address or your own private one. There is no facility for any access to your information other than for purposes of administration, help or moderation.
